It’s universally acknowledged that winter nights are the perfect time to cosy up on the couch and catch up on some quality Netflix time. We love to load the coffee table up with a delicious meal, some sneaky snacks and, of course, a delicious bottle of wine before settling in and selecting the night’s viewing. Our best tip for beating the perpetual game of ‘what should we watch?’ Matching a movie, or tv show, with your vino! Here, we’ve laid out some combinations that we think are perfect for your next Netflix night.
Estate Range Cabernet Sauvignon with…
Movie: The Irishman
A big, heavy red needs an equally heavy hitter to match. Enter: The Irishman. This 2019 epic crime film is the mastermind of none other than Martin Scorsese, and stars industry greats Robert de Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. You just know this movie means business, and so does our cab sauv. We sourced the fruit from the cool-climate region of nearby Young, and it was at its absolute best when picked. It was made to be savoured and enjoyed, meaning it’s perfect for keeping you company through all 209 minutes of The Irishman.
TV Show: Money Heist
Cabernet is known for being bold – and there’s not much bolder than robbing a bank. Except maybe breaking into the actual Royal Mint of Spain and holding citizens hostage while you attempt to literally print money – billions of it. That’s the situation in Money Heist, a Spanish crime drama that has become a huge hit thanks to how seriously binge-worthy it is. Like our cabernet’s palate of blackcurrant, red berries, choc-mint and a hint of leaf, it is complex, with flashbacks, time jumps and an unreliable narrator adding to the layers of mystery. Enjoy… although the suspense is bound to keep you on the edge of your seat, so watch your wine!
Special Release Sangiovese with….
Movie: Eat Pray Love
Sangiovese is one of Italy’s most famous and loved varietals, so it makes a great match for this modern classic that sees Julia Roberts’ character travelling around the world to find herself and discover ‘la dolce vita’ in Italy. Our head winemaker Mike gave props to his own Italian heritage when deciding to produce sangiovese, which suits the NSW Hilltops climate to a tee, so as Julia indulges in Italy’s best food, you’ll be loving this wine’s cherry and savoury notes. Just make sure you’ve ordered a pizza before you get to the scene of her trying Naples finest, or your mouth will be watering!
TV Show: Chef’s Table
This documentary series is absolute heaven for foodies. It features some of the world’s most renowned chefs sharing their passions and inspirations as they prepare one of their signature dishes, with the first episode starring an Italian legend: Massimo Bottura. The owner of acclaimed restaurant Francescana, Bottura is known for taking traditional Italian dishes and transforming them with innovative techniques and the results are incredible. Subsequent episodes explore many cuisines and countries and will have you making a mental list of all the things you’re keen to cook, so it’s a good thing our sangiovese’s medium body and savoury flavours make it a super versatile food wine. With six seasons available to stream, there’s plenty to get your teeth stuck into, and whatever Chef’s Table gets you craving, there’s a high chance our sangiovese will make a great match.
Special Release Sparkling Chardonnay with…
Movie: Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
This 2020 comedy is light, bubbly and makes you feel good – just like our Sparkling Chardonnay. A celebration of the glitz, glamour and ridiculousness of Eurovision, The Story of Fire Saga stars Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as a struggling music duo from Iceland who are randomly selected to participate in the famous song contest. There are sparkling sets and over-the-top performances of the poppiest of songs, so if you’re after something completely silly and a whole lot of fun, this is for you. Assemble a charcuterie board full of things Europe does unquestionably right, like cured meats, cheeses, and accompaniments, and charge your bubbles to a night of sing-alongs and laughs!
TV: The Crown
This loosely fictionalised drama chronicling the lives of the British Royal Family is now up to its fourth season, with a litany of praise and a swag of awards under its belt. If you’re yet to bow to pressure and dive in, this is your sign to cave! Our sparkling chardonnay makes the perfect companion, thanks to its crisp elegance. Like the delicate workings of the monarchy, this wine is all about structure, and balances creaminess with acidity to create a rich, tasty mouth feel. And though a penchant for sticking with traditions may cause friction in the Royal Family, it pays off here, where we produce our sparkling chardonnay using ‘Methode Traditionelle’. The result is a delight to drink with persistent and fine bubbles.
