Mike has been good friends with Jeremy Dineen, ex-winemaker at Josef Chromy, since his days at Roseworthy Agricultural College. In 2021, Mike was looking to source some quality Pinot noir but was shit-out-of-luck after a great vintage in Tasmania spiked huge demand for pinot. Jeremy suggested that Mike take a parcel of shiraz grown from one of Tasmania’s northern most vineyards in the upper Tamar Valley.
The Wine
Picked near Launceston, processed in Hobart, and finished in our 2,500 litre foudre here in the winery. A medium-weight blend with aromatic spice and pepper notes. Soft, juicy fruits with medium tannins are balanced by good acidity. Hints of blackcurrant linger on the palate, offering a satisfying length.
The Vintage
The 2021 Tasmanian wine grape vintage enjoyed the much sought-after combination of good yields and exceptional quality. Consistent themes of generous rain in winter and spring, cool temperatures and steady ripening, ensuring the resultant wines will show intense yet elegant flavours and a vibrant structure.
The Potential
This wine shines with optimal balance, but promises even greater refinement over the next 5 to 10 years. It’s current state hints at a bright future, with potential for enhanced complexity and depth with further cellaring.
The Match
The robust flavours of Glenbothy Vineyard Shiraz harmonise beautifully with Chinese five-spice roasted duck. The wine’s spice notes and juicy fruit
complement the rich and succulent meat, while its structure stands up to the dish’s bold flavors, resulting in a memorable culinary experience.
