Our latest release, the 2024 Steven Vineyard Pecorino, is more than just a wine; it’s a testament to our roots in the Abruzzo region of Italy and a captivating exploration of an unusual white variety right here in the Hunter Valley.
As Rick Allen from the Newcastle Herald aptly noted, “Pecorino is the native white variety of the Abruzzo region of Italy, from which the De Iuliis family originally migrated.” This deep connection to our origins imbues our Pecorino with a special significance, allowing us to bring a piece of our ancestral home to your glass.
What makes our Pecorino truly stand out? We’ve embraced an “unusual” approach, crafting it in a style reminiscent of a textural Chardonnay. This involves deliberate malolactic fermentation and extended time on lees. For those new to these winemaking terms, malolactic fermentation softens the wine’s acidity, while lees contact (allowing the wine to sit on spent yeast cells) imparts a wonderful creamy texture and added complexity.
The result, as Rick describes, is a “more textural Pecorino, creamy and soft with acid restrained.” This creates a wine that is both intriguing and incredibly approachable, offering a delightful richness that sets it apart from typical crisp whites. It’s a testament to our commitment to innovation while honouring the varietal’s Italian roots.
