Tasting Notes
Region
Lovedale Road (LDR) Vineyard, Hunter Valley
The Story
Mike was still in school when, in 1991, his father, Joss and grandfather, Charlie, planted these Shiraz vines on their Lovedale Road (LDR) property. Planted on clay loam over friable red clay, this soil yields exceptionally well-built Shiraz. The 3 ha of Shiraz is sourced from heritage shiraz cuttings.
The Wine
Deep red in colour with a vibrant purple hue, this wine captivates with savoury, earthy, and blue-fruited aromatics. The palate unfolds with richness and complexity, offering notes of blueberry, sweet plums, blackberries, and savoury spice. Medium-bodied with impeccable balance, it culminates in a rounded finish embraced by well-integrated tannins.
The Vintage
A cooler ripening period yielded elegant red wines with intricate fruit profiles. Breakthrough rainfall after a drought paved the way for an outstanding growing season. A cool summer and timely heat spikes fostered stress-free ripening, ensuring optimal flavour development and high natural acidity.
The Potential
Currently drinking exceptionally well, this wine offers a delightful experience in every sip. However, its true potential shines in the years ahead. With the capacity to gracefully evolve over the next 5 to 10 years, anticipate a journey of refinement and complexity, unlocking new layers of character and depth with each passing year.
The Match
Complement the 2021 LDR Vineyard Shiraz with a succulent rack of lamb, expertly seasoned and slow-roasted to perfection. The wine’s savoury, earthy notes harmonise seamlessly with the tender meat, while its rich berry flavours enhance the dish’s depth. Together, they create a culinary experience that enhances your dining pleasure.
